Target Audience:

This course is designed for Library Media Specialists working in schools or in the Public Library system. It may also be appropriate for those who work with Historical Societies, Reading Programs, Literacy Programs and ENL Programs.

Course Purpose:

The purpose of this course is to get you thinking about how to transform the Library or Media Center so that it is relevant to today’s patrons and also to build a foundation for the future.

Course Description:

We understand that the world is changing at a rapid rate. Our focus is to make Media Centers relevant to today’s learners, as well as tomorrow’s learners. It includes building a sense of community centered on creativity, research and cultural experiences.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course participants will:

  • Have a better understanding of the needs and wants of the patrons based on information they gather.
  • They will be exposed to a variety of methods by which to obtain the information which may include but not be limited to: developing a brief survey, suggestion box, social media, etc. You may also obtain information by connecting with personnel from other library systems to see what they are doing to stay relevant in an ever-changing world.
  • Develop some clear short term and long term goals regarding the direction of the Media Center, as suggested by the results of the surveying techniques
  • Tap into community organizations that might already be doing what you want to do.
  • Get started on achieving their goals

Rose Sgambelluri

Rose Sgambelluri has taught High School Business for over 20 years. She made the transition to Library Media Specialist 2 years ago and hasn’t looked back. She is currently employed as the Library Media Specialist at Boston Middle School in Laporte, Indiana. She has served as a consultant for the Laporte County Public Library; working in collection development, developing curriculum kits and training Library staff.
