Course Description
Through an ongoing pandemic and civil and political unrest, millions of American children and their teachers are returning to K-12 classrooms traumatized. Trauma-informed classrooms have never been more pertinent or more important!
Trauma Symptoms in Children and Adults: A Course for Educators is the second in a 3-part series that provides information on trauma in a way that is applicable for K-12 teachers. This course will give you the foundational knowledge to:
- Recognize trauma symptoms in children and adults
- Recognize untreated trauma
- Identify the ways that trauma effects students ability to learn
Target Audience
This course is intended for k-12 teachers of any discipline.
Course Purpose
This course provides K-12 Educators of any discipline with foundational knowledge of trauma symptoms in children and adults, symptoms and behaviors of untreated trauma, and the learning challenges that come with being traumatized.
Objectives
This course expands on the subject of trauma and trauma-informed classrooms and is the second in a 3-part series.
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Name the signs and symptoms of trauma in children by age group
- Name the cognitive, behavioral, physical, and psychological symptoms of trauma in adults.
- Identify the consequences of untreated trauma
- Identify behaviors in the classroom that may indicate trauma in a student
- Explain why it is harder for traumatized students to learn

This course will take students about 10 hours to complete.

Course Instructor: Teresa Campbell, MM, MA
Teresa Campbell is a musician, advocate, and experienced instructor specializing in working with immigrant students and students with traumatic backgrounds. She has taught violin and orchestra to children and adults, English as a Second Language to adults, provided GED coaching to adults looking to get their high school diploma, and has also worked in the areas of youth homelessness and crisis work. Teresa holds a Bachelor of Music in violin performance, a Master of Music in Music Education, and a second Master of Arts in English as a Second Language. In addition to writing online professional development courses, Teresa works as an Adult Education Coordinator at the Hartford Public Library, maintains a small studio of violin and viola students, plays gigs in the Hartford area, and holds the position of Regional Vice Chair for Region 1 on the Board of American Mensa.
